How the GOP Is Literally Killing Its Voters | Alternet
"In the past, there were many Republicans who saw the value of having a social safety net. Today’s Tea Party Republicans, however, believe in assaulting the poor and the middle class at every turn—and the older whites who vote for them are not exempt. Between butchering the food stamp program, opposing healthcare reform, trying to turn Social Security over to the whims of Wall Street, and going out of their way to eliminate what’s left of the New Deal, modern-day Republicans are no friends of older Americans—including their older white male rural base."

The Great American Do-It-Yourself Retirement Fraud, Brought to You By Big Finance & Co. | Alternet
"The United States is on the verge of a retirement crisis. For the first time in living memory, it seems likely that living standards for those over the age of 65 will begin to decline as compared to those who came before them—and that’s without taking into account the possibility that Social Security benefits will be cut at some point in the future.

The culprit? That same thing Mathisen celebrated: the 401(k), along with the other instruments of do-it-yourself retirement. Not only did they not make us millionaires as self-appointed pundits like Mathisen promised, they left very many of us with very little at all."

"About 8.5 million people are going to get a check from their insurance company this summer. Yes, you read that right: Health insurance companies are actually sending money to subscribers. That's because of a provision in the Affordable Care Act that insurance companies hate more than just about any other: the medical loss ratio. That just means that there is a cap on how much of your premium dollars the insurance companies can spend on administrative costs and keep as profits. Under Obamacare, 80 percent of your payment has to go to your care."

‘Death By Zip Code’: Health Disparities Between Rich And Poor Areas Are Only Getting Worse
‘Death By Zip Code’: Health Disparities Between Rich And Poor Areas Are Only Getting Worse: On Tuesday, a new report revealed that Americans are in “mediocre” health, and the United States has significantly worse health outcomes than other wealthy countries. Increasing Social Security Benefits: An Idea Whose Time Has Come | Common Dreams
Increasing Social Security Benefits: An Idea Whose Time Has Come | Common Dreams
"Archaeologists of the future will sift through our newspapers, websites, and other ephemera and marvel at the inverted shape of our political debate. They’ll be particularly surprised to discover that, at a time when retirement security was being destroyed for an entire generation, politicians were posturing over how to make the problem even worse by cutting Social Security. The concept of increasing Social Security has been around for a while. Strengthen Social Security, a coalition of 320 groups, reviewed the program’s ability to meet current and future needs and concluded that benefits should be increased rather than cut.

And they’ll marvel over how long it took us to agree on the right solution: Increasing Social Security benefits instead."

Rebuking Austerity, Americans Say: Strengthen Social Security | Common Dreams
"While recent proposals from lawmakers and corporate CEO 'extremists' have put Social Security benefits on the chopping block, Americans are coming out in strong support of the vital program. They are saying: Preserve it. Fund it. Strengthen it. Raise our taxes for it."
